A
quick guide to SEO
search engine optimisation (SEO) is broken into two
areas.
On-Site
Optimisation
Any work which relates to the web site, its content,
structure, source code, etc.
Off-Site Optimisation
Any work which is carried out after the completion
of the On-Site work. This work is ongoing and can be defined
as the web sites Strategic Marketing Campaign.
What
is not generally known is that Google applies maximum
scores to each of the above areas which then relate to
the web sites final positions. For most people they are
surprised to learn that the web site is by far the least
important of the two! As far as the major search engine's
are concerned the split is as follows:
- On-Site,
makes up around 20% of your Webster's possible positions
- Off-Site,
makes up the remaining 80%
That
means that even the most optimised web site in the world
only has a 20% opportunity of gaining those top positions
for competitive keywords. But how do these points relate
to positions?
We
can make you number 1 in google in 5 seconds! read on:
Some
keywords require less points to achieve than others, i.e.
they are less competitive, to prove this follow the following
points and you will be number 1 in google in 5 minutes!
-
Pick
a page on your web site that has some text on it, preferably
the home page.
-
Copy
around 10-15 words form this page and paste them into
Goggles search bar.
-
Hit
search.
-
You
should be #1, its as easy as that....
What
you did was to create a very long keyword that's all. Google
search its database for all the sites in the world with
the words you just copied into the search bar and yours
was the only one with them in the exact same order. Now
try another experiment:
-
Start
deleting words from the end of your 15 keywords.
-
Continue
until you drop from the top spot.
-
Try
to look down the listing and you will see for every
word you remove you will drop lower and lower.
i.e.
The amount of other web sites with your phrase on have increased,
and the words are gradually becoming more competitive.
What
this exercise shows you is that despite the fact that Google
has picked your site up for a particular search, maintaining
top positions as your phrases become more competitive must
be down to something else and this is what we call On-Site.
